Script Submission Policy & Terms

A Program of Mt Hood Repertory Theatre

Overview

Readers Theatre Gresham (RTG) invites playwrights to submit original works for consideration as part of our staged reading series.

RTG serves as the development stage of Mt Hood Repertory Theatre, offering playwrights the opportunity to hear their work performed in front of a live audience, engage in feedback, and contribute to a growing artistic community.

Submission of a script constitutes agreement to the following policies and terms.

Submission Eligibility

RTG accepts submissions from:

• emerging and established playwrights
• local, regional, and national writers

Eligible works include:

• full-length plays
• one-act plays
• staged reading–appropriate scripts

Scripts must be:

• original works
• owned or controlled by the submitting playwright
• not in violation of any copyright or licensing agreements

Submission Process

Playwrights must submit:

• completed script (PDF format)
• brief synopsis
• playwright bio
• contact information

RTG may request additional materials if needed.

Selection Process

Due to limited programming capacity, submissions are curated and competitive.

Scripts are selected based on:

• artistic quality
• alignment with RTG and MHRT values
• suitability for staged reading format
• audience engagement potential

Selection is determined by:

• RTG Artistic Director
• MHRT leadership (as needed)

Not all submissions will be selected.

Submission Fees

RTG reserves the right to implement a submission or participation fee.

If applied, all fees will be clearly stated at the time of submission.

Submission fees are non-refundable.

Rights & Permissions

By submitting a script, the playwright confirms:

• they hold the rights to the work
• they have full authority to grant permission for a staged reading

If selected, the playwright agrees to grant MHRT and RTG:

• non-exclusive permission to perform the work as a staged reading
• permission to use the script title, synopsis, and excerpts for promotional purposes

Full production rights are not implied or transferred.

Licensing & Legal Compliance

RTG will:

• secure all necessary permissions for the reading
• ensure compliance with performance rights

If additional permissions are required, the playwright must:

• provide documentation upon request
• assist in securing any necessary approvals

Failure to provide proper rights may result in removal from the program.

Compensation

RTG staged readings are considered development opportunities.

At this time:

• playwrights are not guaranteed compensation for readings
• any compensation or honorarium will be communicated in advance, if applicable

Script Integrity & Modifications

RTG and participating directors will respect the integrity of submitted works.

However:

• minor adjustments for timing, clarity, or staging may be requested
• any significant changes will require playwright approval

The playwright retains full authorship and ownership of their work.

Rehearsal & Participation

Playwright participation is optional but encouraged.

Opportunities may include:

• attending rehearsals
• engaging in post-show discussions
• participating in audience talkbacks

Participation expectations will be communicated upon selection.

Recording & Media Policy

In accordance with RTG policy and licensing standards:

• video recording of readings is not permitted
• distribution of recorded material is prohibited

Photography may occur for promotional purposes.

By participating, playwrights grant permission for:

• photography during rehearsals and performances
• use of images for marketing and promotional use

Content Standards

All submitted works must align with MHRT and RTG values.

The following content is prohibited:

• hate speech
• illegal content
• use of prohibited or unsafe materials in staging

Scripts containing mature themes must:

• be clearly identified at submission
• be appropriate for audience disclosure in marketing

RTG reserves the right to decline any work that does not align with these standards.

Marketing & Promotion

If selected, playwrights agree to:

• provide a bio and relevant materials for promotion
• allow use of their name and work for marketing purposes

Playwrights are encouraged to:

• promote their reading
• engage with their audience and community

Cancellation & Withdrawal

If a playwright wishes to withdraw their script:

• written notice must be provided as soon as possible

RTG reserves the right to:

• replace selected works if necessary
• adjust programming due to unforeseen circumstances

Removal Clause

RTG and MHRT reserve the right to remove a script from programming if:

• rights cannot be verified
• policies are violated
• the work no longer aligns with program standards

All removal decisions are final.

Agreement

Submission of a script confirms agreement to all policies outlined above.

These policies exist to:

• protect playwright rights
• ensure legal compliance
• maintain the integrity of the RTG program
